Plan your trip like a pro with this guide to Costa Rica’s tropical climate.
When planning a trip to Costa Rica, the question on every traveler’s mind is: What’s the weather like? With its lush rainforests, golden beaches, and misty volcanoes, Costa Rica offers a variety of climates depending on where — and when — you visit. But don’t worry, once you understand the basics, packing and planning become a breeze.
Dry Season vs. Rainy Season: The Basics
Costa Rica has two primary seasons:
Dry Season (“Verano”) – From December to April, the sun is shining, skies are blue, and beach days are abundant. This is the most popular time to visit, especially along the Pacific Coast, where you’ll find little to no rain.
Rainy Season (“Invierno”) – From May to November, expect daily afternoon showers, especially in the central and southern regions. Mornings are often clear, making this a peaceful time for jungle hikes and wildlife watching.
Don’t be scared off by “rainy season” — it’s also known as the green season for a reason. Fewer crowds, lower prices, and vibrant, blooming landscapes make it a favorite for savvy travelers.
Regional Differences Matter
Costa Rica’s weather varies dramatically depending on location:
Guanacaste (Northwest) – The driest region in the country. Even during rainy season, showers are short and sweet. Great for beach vacations!
Central Valley (including San José) – Mild, spring-like weather year-round with cool mornings and warm afternoons.
Caribbean Coast – A wild card! Unlike the Pacific side, the Caribbean often sees its driest weather from September to October.
Southern Pacific – Lush and tropical, this area gets heavy rainfall during rainy season — but also some of the most breathtaking natural beauty.
What to Pack for Costa Rica Weather
Dry Season: Lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and a swimsuit.
Rainy Season: A light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, sturdy shoes or sandals, and insect repellent.
Year-Round Essentials: A reusable water bottle, layers for cooler mountain areas, and a sense of adventure.
